Analog lifestyle blog

The growing trend on platforms like TikTok of “what’s in my analog bag” has started a conversation of screen times, brain rot, and what it actually means to relax. Partially fueled by nostalgia of a simpler childhood and a reaction to the growing phone addictions seen across the globe. The sharp shift we are watching for the desire of an offline lifestyle can be seen across many social media platforms. The analog bag is an easy way for most people to start addressing their screen time with easy replacements often with items and hobbies you have around your home.

Why is having an analog bag even worth it?!?!

When we sit down to relax we often start to mindlessly scroll on our phones. Dr.Nerurkar of Harvard Health states that constant doomscrolling can cause “Popcorn brain” which occurs when your brain spends too much time consuming online content. When you are being overstimulated online it can cause a popping effect in your brain that then makes it hard to engage with the real world due to its much slower pace. By giving our brains hobbies that require time, we slow down and be more present with the moment and our bodies are encouraged to have a more restorative rest.

So, what’s in my analog bag? Thank you for asking!

I have:

– 2 coloring books & colored pencils

– 2 physical books

– 1 CD player & a rotating CD collection

– 1 sticker by number book

– hand cream and chapstick

These were all items and hobbies I already had in my home that I felt were not getting enough attention due to my after work couch doomscrolling. I had put them all in an easily accessible bag next to my couch…then my dog chewed the strap off my bag. So I moved them to a nearby drawer! Your analog bag does not need to be a physical bag; it could be a cute bin or basket or drawer. It should always be very close and in eyesight of where you do most of your doomscrooling. The reason it should always be close by is to remove as much friction as possible from starting the activity. Social media often feels easy because there is no effort to open an app and start scrolling away. We are trying to achieve the same effortless effect by having all the materials needed for your desired activity in one spot.

Each persons analog bag will be unique to them! Some other ideas for what to include:

  • A preloaded ipod or mp3 with music,audiobooks,podcast
  • A game console (switch,gameboy,steamdeck)
  • Crochet or knitting supplies
  • Embroidery supplies
  • Paint by number
  • Diamond art
  • Face mask or lip mask

I do strongly encourage your bag at the beginning to be comprised of things you already have around your home or hobbies you have started and put down. There is no need to buy the perfect bag, perfect markers, or newest book. We should all try to not give into the consumption of having a perfectly aesthetic bag. It should be functional and individualized to you! <3
